
Around the end of the 19th/beginning of the 20th century, advocates for the French and Italian systems of fencing held fierce debates over which system was superior. Articles and letters were published, public fencing matches were held between top fencers, and in a few cases, duels were held between the top French and Italian Masters. This illustration depicts scenes from one such duel.
